The Clowns - Jumbo 7" (1980)

This record is being posted by request. The person who requested it is an asshole. I'm not posting it for them, but for the rest of you. I considered not posting it at all because the person who requested it is undeserving.

B - Wooly Bully

I HAVE ALLOWED COMMENTS AGAIN

There is a YouTube channel called Skaville City that posts a lot of rare ska songs.  It's a good channel and I have actually gained a lot of knowledge from that channel. There have been several songs posted on that channel that I didn't know about. I am a subscriber.

But the truth is that channel posts very little original content. The bulk of that channel is things that were taken from other sources. Mostly from other YouTube channels but also from blogs and other online sources.  The arrogant creator of that channel rarely gives credit for the sources for the things that they post. They want you to believe it's all their own doing.

A significant number of things posted on that channel are from Tone and Wave. I think fans of this blog have already seen that. I like that the music is being shared and I don't need any sort of credit for spending my own money on these recordings, spending hours ripping and editing these recordings, or scanning the images and spending time editing these scans. I don't ask for credit for any of these things. It's the bands that deserve the credit.

But for somebody else to come along - sometimes within an hour of a post that I spent many hours on - posting it on their channel and wanting credit for it, it sucks.

Here's some context. The guy who does the Skaville City channel asked if I had anything in his wantlist. I mentioned that I had this record but I had not ripped it yet. On December 6th I told him I'll rip it and post it on the blog in a week or so. Because I have a job and a family and because it is the holiday season and this blog is not the most important thing in my life I didn't quite get around to ripping the record.

So I get these messages. Look at the date and times. This is strange behavior:

I don't quite get all of the references but I have made the joke many times in the past that "I've never been wrong about anything in my life!". That's obviously a joke. Why somebody doesn't recognize that as a joke says more about them than about me.

Anyway, this is not the first time I have had interactions with this weirdo in the past. In fact I get lots of messages like this. This is why I stopped comments on the blog. This is why I stopped Facebook.

I am not a ska expert and I never claimed to be one. I'm just some guy who collects and shares ska music. I've been told plenty of times that I need to correct something wrong that I posted on the blog. The shit I post comes from what I can find on the internet. If it's been on the internet for 22 years and I post it on the blog why the hell would I correct it because one single nobody says that the thing I posted is wrong? They could be right but I don't know and I don't care. I just like the music. That's it. I don't give a shit about the band members and what other thing they did. Most of the time I have interacted with ska musicians they say "Hey, you like that ska I did in the 80s? We'll here's the acoustic guitar singer songwriter horseshit I'm working on now! You should love it!" I don't love it and I don't care.

So here you go Skaville City. I spent the money on this record. I did the rips, the editing, and the scans. So go ahead and post it on your YouTube channel.

I told you before, you idiot, that if you ever start fucking with me again I will publicly post your comments and I will shut Tone and Wave down giving you full credit for the end of this blog.

This is the end. This is the last Tone and Wave post.

12/27/2022 is the 15th anniversary of this blog. I have lots more rarities that I haven't posted yet. Skaville City has made a conscious decision to end this blog. The only way I will continue is if I get a public apology from the asshole who runs Skaville City.

It's been fun. Thank you all for keeping ska music alive!

The Creamies - Cherry on the Top 7" (1984)

This was a British ska band who played it slow and mellow. In their existence as a band they only ever released this one single but they started recording a full length album in 1984 that they never finished.

A - Cherry on the Top

B - Emotional Ocean

Prior to this single they contributed the song  "Bingo Erotica" to the 1982 compilation album "Battle of the Bands"

They re-recorded Bingo Erotica for their unreleased album but I much prefer the 1982 version.

In 2015 they released the album tracks on CD Baby as "Cherry on the Top etc." with a slightly modified cover...

...aside from adding "etc." in an un-matching font, the cherry in the figure's hand is now red. It did look too much like a cocktail olive on the 7" cover so I understand this bold move.

This release included 8 tracks. The song "Cherry on the Top" is the exact same recording from the single but the B-Side "Emotional Ocean" is surprisingly absent which is odd because it is one of their better tunes.

The Creamies - Cherry on the Top etc. (2015)

1 Big Tough Toys

2 Clean

3 Tribesman a Come

4 Bingo Erotica

5 Kingston

6 Prosecution (Ain't No Solution)

7 Cherry on the Top

8 One World

This download includes my rip of the 7" plus the song Bingo Erotica from 1982 plus all 8 songs from the unreleased album. Remember, slow and mellow.

Hitmen For Hire - Money in the Pocket 7" (1998)

I was there for the third wave. In Southern California in the mid-to-late 90s we had 19 different clubs in our general vicinity and we were going to shows three or four times a week. I know third wave ska.

And I certainly know what a third wave ska-punk record looks like. This looks exactly like a third wave ska-punk record. I pretty much already knew what it would sound like before I played it. Young guys making puerile jokes with songs about school and girls, and their messed up job/car situation; distorted guitars; snotty/bratty vocals singing "pickituppickituppickitup!" with noticeable ripoff riffs and choruses from well known bands at the time.

Look at that cover. Look at the record (white vinyl- they're up to something).

Now, you're getting the same vibe that I was getting, right. Third wave ska-punk?

But I was wrong. We are wrong.

I was expecting something more like Bingo Mut but they sound more like Hepcat. It threw me for a loop.

Two instrumental tracks that I never would have expected from the images I was seeing.

Never judge a book by its movie and never judge a ska band by its record cover.

Actually, no, it's okay to judge a ska record by its cover; they are pretty accurate. Just not this one.

B -  Captain Jones

Yeah Yeah!

Yeah Yeah! was a ska/rockabilly/swing/skiffle band from Australia that included Steveo from Area 7. I think they started in 1987 and they finally called it quits around 1997. I think.

I'm really no expert on this band but I think this is everything they released in their time as a band.

Some of these recordings are my own rips and scans but I was able to fill in the blanks thanks to the YouTube channel run by Steve Rodgers.

Yeah Yeah! - Because She Loves Me 7" (1991)

A - Because She Loves Me

B- Bring My CadillacBack

(Neither of these two songs are ska but this record is part of the collection so it's included.)

The Norman Three Sixty - The Norman Three-Sixty (1996)

The Norman Three-Sixty (also called The Norman 360) was a ska band from Lawrence, Kansas. As you can tell from their logo the band was named after an oscillating fan. Their sound is more legitimate ska than it is ska-punk.

I don't know if they ever released, or even recorded, anything besides this cassette. The song "Sonic" from this recording was on Skarmageddon 3 but I haven't found anything else by them except for a live show that was recorded live in-studio at the University of Kansas on their radio station KJHK in October 1998. I included this whole recording in the download. Much thanks to theNuthouse Soundcloud channel for preserving and sharing this gem!

7 Seconds of Love - Danger is Dangerous (2008)

This was a British ska band that composed some really mature intelligent ska tunes and mixed those songs equally with some silly stuff.

From what Google is showing I think this is their only release. They did have one song that was on Skannibal Party 9 in 2009 called "Miss U". I have included that track in this download.

1 First Drink of the Day

2 Danger of Death

3 My Car

4 Twister

5 Love Me Like You Used to Do

6 Mzungu

Swingtones - It's too Late to Stop Them (1996)

This was a straight-forward ska band from Minnesota. This is their only album but they did record a demo tape which is included in this download. After a line-up change (I don't know if "some members quit" is exactly a line-up change) they changed their name to Hollywood Rivals and they released one album. That album is also included in this download. You might notice a few songs were re-recorded under this name.

I often say that I can't believe a band wasn't more popular than it was and that is absolutely true in this case. The vocals are decent. The lyrics are clever. The musicianship is very professional. The songwriting is on a whole 'nother level. I have been listening to these three recordings over and over again this past week and I hear something new on each listen that I didn't catch before.

These guys were young when these songs were composed. I have been playing music and composing songs for 35 years and I'm not quite yet at the level that they were at back then.

*The tracklist on Discogs is wrong. There are only 9 songs on this CD and there is no bonus track. The first track is a short sound clip, not a song. The last song on the CD is Something Wrong -but- when the CD is ripped on a computer it mislabels all of the tracks as shown on Discogs.

In 1998 Hollywood Rivals toured the West Coast and they made a video of highlights from that tour:
