Scraptown was a very successful Reggae/Pop/Rock combo in the early 80's in Greece. They'd play every Pub and had released three albums, of which "Give me a break" was the most successful one.

Songs like "Viva Sahara" became number one in Greece and gained huge radio play in Italy and France, as well as in other southern European countries.

Clive Pig was an acoustic guitar storyteller/poet that meshed in nicely with the late 70s punk scene. He released lots of good material with different bands. This particular record is not hard to find.

Even if you're not a big fan of punk-reggae this one's a good one. It will grow on you.

Public Service?! - Somebody Scream! (1990)

The ultra rare impossible-to-find cassette only first release from Philadelphia's Public Service?! from 1990. This is the one that is notorious for being a Moon Ska Records release but there's no mention anywhere on the tape or inlay card of Moon Records. They did put a sticker on the shrink-wrap (seen HERE)It could be said this is not an actual Moon release because they did not produce it, they only distributed it but it did have a Moon catalogue number MR-026cs.

Anyway...this is rare stuff, and they say their main inspiration is Fishbone and it's noticeable.

Ultra rare ska!
I have looked for this damn record for years and finally - here it is. Not a bad tune either.
These guys were from Ireland and they had some other non-ska releases. This one here may have been their final record.
Trombone on this one was provided by John Trotter of the Plattermen.

They had a minor hit in 1964 with a soul cover of Perry Como's "Catch a Falling Star" (The b-side to that is a song called "Only Friends")
They tried their hand at disco in 1979 with "Boogie on Up / Don't Stop Me" 7"
and they had a couple more singles I know nothing about: "Love Me Love Me Do" and "Dance with Me"
Keep in mind I've never heard any of their other music and they barely exist anywhere on the internet so my descriptions of their other releases may be dead wrong.

These guys were Dutch and this was released on Don Quixote Records. It seems the real push for the record was for the song No Promises. The Worker should have been a B-side but it was better than No Promises so they released it as a double A-side. Anything else I can't tell you. I used to have it written down somewhere what year this was released but I can't find my notes. If I have to hazard a guess I'll say either '81 or '82. Don't quote me in that.

I have so many of these songs by non-ska bands that are worth knowing about and maybe worth hearing once or twice, but really they aren't good music. Just a bunch of bands that either used to be famous and they saw their audiences disappearing or bands who were never famous in the first place and they thought they could grab some attention by playing ska-type-stuff and then impress their new listeners with their real sound later. I don't think it worked for anybody in the end. Either the crowd was disappointed when they went to the show and heard what the band really sounded like, or the one ska/reggae song the band did was a throwaway song from their original set and they just threw an upstroke into it.
There are a lot of terrible songs that came from this era and this line of thinking and I was going to do one big blog-post called Bad Pop does Bad Ska...or something equally as clever.
This is one of the songs I was going to include in that post but in the last week this song has really grown on me.
I'm still going to do that post and you'll see that this really is a superior product compared to some of the other shit that's out there.

Earth and Fire were a 70s rock band from the Netherlands who had a number of releases between 1970 and 1990. This is their only attempt at a ska/reggae song and it was their biggest hit ever. So big that it even got them attention outside of the Netherlands. It was number 1 in Switzerland, Germany, Denmark and Portugal as well. It never did make a splash in the UK, the US, or even in the Republic of Suriname - until now!

The song is really not a bad little ditty and the singer Jerney is just adorable. There are a few videos of this song on Youtube that are about the same exact performance with her in different outfits. (I ain't complaining). And they all showcase her ability to dance with all the finesse of an 8-year old in front of her bedroom mirror. ('Turning around' is a dance move attempted by many, mastered by few).

One Eye Open released a full length called Hellaut, a split LP with the band Schlong, and a 7" called Boobs: The Incomplete Set which are all available for free download on Very Small Records' own blog HERE

The Boobs 7" is a collection of t.v. show theme songs and commercials that was originally on cassette. There wasn't enough room for all of them on the 7" - hence "incomplete set".

Either somebody's ashamed of their past and doesn't want it exposed, or they honestly think there's a potential for them to make money on later releasing their music that is very far outside the money demographic.

I have been working 2 jobs and going to classes.
The few minutes that I am home and awake (I sleep anywhere between 2 and 4 hours a night - seriously, then I drive about 40 miles in either direction)I have no interest in touching a computer when I get home. I have lots of interesting rarities to share still but damn...that takes some time.
I will be quitting one of the jobs next week and I'll be done with school in the next couple months. By the end of summer I'll be back to full speed with the blog. (as long as I'm not shut down by people with youthful minds [I said "people with youthful minds" instead of childish bastards so as to be less offensive]*)

I haven't even looked at my email but maybe twice in the last - days? weeks? months?

Class Action were from Cambridge, Massachusetts and they released one great ska EP in 1984. They later recorded four more songs which were produced by Don Dixon (Marshall Crenshaw, R.E.M., Counting Crows, Hootie and the Blowfish, etc) but only one "Thieves' Market" was released. You might remember it from the first Mash it Up compilation from 1986.
In 1987 they changed their sound to more of a college-rock style but they maintained a bit of their old ska influence and recorded a single and the album "Things You Left Behind" - which included the song Thieves' Market.

Rare Skavengers The tracks

On my post for Skavengers The I mentioned that "Party Girls" is one of my all-time favorite songs. I thought it was a damn shame that there was only one release by such a talented band.

It has come to my attention recently that, although they only had one release, there were more recordings made. Drummer Dave Parsons has shared a few songs with me but I am not at liberty to post them.

I do know that there are more songs but I can't say if they'll be available to anybody any time soon. Who knows what will become of them if we all show enough interest. I posted their other 2 singles HERE and, out of ignorance, I said those were their only releases. I was wrong.
The song Black and White was written about the US Supreme Court decision in 1954 that outlawed racial segregation in public schools. It was first recorded by Sammy Davis Jr. but it's more known because of the Three Dog Night version recorded in 1972.
It was recorded in 1971 by the UK reggae group Greyhound as their first single and it was their rendition that inspired Three Dog Night to do their take on it.

The Twits - Sweets for My Sweet 7'' (1980)

Patricia Paay is a well known pop star from the Netherlands and she and her sister Yvonne Keeley were in the band Star Sisters.
This is the only thing they recorded under the name the Twits and it's extremely hard to find. It appears on eBay every now and then and never goes for less than $100 because it's sought after more by Patricia Paay fans than ska collectors.

After Star Sisters broke up Patricia had a very successful solo career and even posed for Playboy a few times.
She was married to American MTV veejay Adam Curry.

"The G Men are a ska band from Northern England who were formed in 1989 in Darlington. The first band rehearsal took place at Chandos Street Recording Studio with Dins, Dell (aka Mr Sausage) and Crozzer. Shortly after this evening of song, Mark Wilson and Laze joined the band and The G Men were born. After a handful of successful local shows, The G Men supported ska legends including Bad Manners, The Selecter, The Nutty Boys, Laurel Aitken, The International Beat and Bim Skala Bim. North Sea Records approached the band to record an album, and 'The G Files' was released on the label in 2000 to favourable reviews from the UK press. The G Men decided to take a break in 2002, but five years later they reformed after a number of alcohol fuelled rehearsals in Darlington. Since their reformation, the dudes have performed alongside Prince Buster, Bad Manners, Neville Staple, Pauline Black, The Toasters, The Hotknives and The Blaster Master. This band is most of the Allniters plus Kirk Pengilly from INXS - they released 2x 12"s.

I interviewed Brett from the Allniters in 1997, and he told me that INXS supported them
when they first started out and gave them a demo tape with ska songs on it including a cover

LOIN GROIN - AIYEFEL SEAT COVERS

You have to hear this one if you haven't already. It comes from a rare cd called
Arise Sir Loin which was only given away at their last ever gig. Sadly I missed it
- them being in Melbourne and I in Sydney, but I managed to track down a copy of the cd.

BEDLAM BEGGERS - SWEET TALKIN' GIRL

This was the band I played in - I wrote song #12 on ska skank down under vol.2,
but not this one. There's about 20 studio tracks in total, and a few live bootlegs.

OFFBEATS [Melbourne] - RIPPLE SOLE SHOES

Gary Skaman Rosche from Melbourne sent this to me only a year or so ago, rare as rocking horse poo,
apparently Pete wanted to put a copy on Ska Skank Down Under vol. 1 but couldn't get this track at the time.
It comes from a 4 song demo tape.

GILGAMESH - UNITY (OPIV cover)

Gilgamesh were a punk ska band from Sydney, recently done some reunion shows. This is an OPIV cover,
they also do "Here we go again" live, which I have on a video bootleg. Graham, the drummer, recorded some
songs with Tim and (either lars or matt) from Rancid when they toured Oz in 1996, but those recordings have
never surfaced over here, not even Graham has a copy.

STRANGE TENANTS - LIVING LIFE

This comes from a live set in Manly, the only bootleg of theirs I have.

Half of this band went on to become Dr. Raju, who I have a few cds, live tracks and one dodgy live video of.

THE HIGH TIDES - WRONG EM BOYO

Gary Skaman's band from Melbourne, 4 song demo tape 2008. Garry puts in guest vocals on Bluekilla's new album as well.

ALLNITERS - STILL IN LOVE

This came from an Ausrock compilation in the early 90s. I had remembered seeing an Allniters
track listed on the cd when I saw it in a store 20 years ago, but only ever found a copy of it
again recently and snagged it straight away.

Pete Porker was after a cd copy as he only had it on tape, apparently there were more tracks
from this session which were never released and I dont have :(

A cover of a Dragon song - are you familiar with them, have you heard the original? they were a fantastic band,
not really ska but April sunn in Suba, Sunshine and this song are classics. Also, Im into heaps of Aussie pub
rock of the 80s, which occasionally crossed over into reggae & ska. Check Cold Chisel's Best Kept Lies or breakfast
at sweethearts if you haven't before.

THE HANGOVERS - LARGE SUM OF MONEY

The Hangovers live track, from a live comp called pulling on the boots, a show put on by Garry singer for the Bedlam Beggars
in 1997. Also had Backy Skank, HBlock, Dr. Raju, Skazoo, plus heaps of punk stuff. One individual track from each band,
then the last track contained another song from most bands.

Okay, first off, I have been working 7 days a week - not because business is good, but because business is bad enough that my place of business is down to a skeleton crew and I was one of the few lucky enough to still be there - so my time on the computer isn't what it used to be and I have been very bad at getting to emails. If you've sent me an email and I haven't answered yet there's a pretty good chance that I will eventually. I'm really trying to answer all of 'em. I'm sorry...

Secondly, I have been getting a lot of complaints lately and I have removed a few posts because people who were in a band 30 years ago think they should be spending the money to put their music on cd and start charging 2011 prices for music that people stopped buying 13 years ago. I'm cool with that. The whole reason that I post this music is to make it available. If the band wants to make it available I'm 100% on their side. I am willing to promote any of the bands I have ever posted on this blog if they ever have anything to sell. We are all on the same side here. I promote ska music over any of the other trends of the day. Don't ostracize the small fan base you have left by acting high-and-mighty.

If your attorney spells the word you as u I'm going to have a a hard time taking him seriously. Why go through the trouble of legal action to begin with when you could just talk to me as a person first? It'll work out better for all of us if you did.

...Tone and Wave is on the verge of being shut down. I have recently taken over a friend's blog Napomm. I have done the last couple of posts and I'll continue doing more, he gave up on it so it's my blog now. I won't be posting much ska on Napomm unless T&W is shut down then I'll continue over there.

Kyber Rifles - 100 Problems EP (1984)

Before there was Let's Go Bowling there was The Kyber Rifles. From 1981 to 1985 they were California's premiere ska band and this is their only release. It's a 7" record in a 7"x9" sleeve.
There is talk that they will be releasing these songs on cd someday. I will remove this post if I find out they are going through with it. They did record other songs (as you can see on their Myspace) so I know I'll be buying the cd. I recommend you do the same.

Andy Pandemonium - I'm Just a Dummy (For Your Love) 7" (1980)

Andy Pandemonium was formed in the late summer of 1979 in the South Wales industrial town of Llanelli. The band members had played together previously in various combinations on the local scene, but the summer of 1979 saw keyboard player Paul “Nick” Nicholas write a series of distinctive songs that effectively combined the eccentricity of the less self-indulgent aspects of 1970s British rock with the urgency and energy of the post-punk new wave. Nick had previously featured in Llanelli-based folk rockers Carraig Aonair alongside drummer Pete Mason, and the pair had previously played with guitarist John “Sioni” Davies and bassist Gareth Phillips in numerous local ventures. Aware of the need for audience friendly presentation of the material, the band decided to recruit singer, sax-player, accordionist and all round dramatic performer Roj to complete the line up. (more)

Crown Agent - Occupational Hazzard 7" (1981)

Somebody sent me an email a couple years back about this one and they hinted that this was U2 with a female singer. I don't know that this information is true but, coincidentally, it was produced by Laurie Mellor who once organized a Christian retreat in the early 80s that U2 not only attended, but spoke at...and a recording was made:

The January 1981 retreat was held at the Gaines Christian Center in Worcester, England, and organized by Laurie Mellor as a Ghettout Music event. Mellor started Ghettout Music in 1980 as a recording and management company for motivating Christian musicians to leave the Christian music sub-culture behind for the mainstream music world.

...On the 45-minute recording, Bono, then 20, and Edge, 19, speak about their faith, the battles they face as Christians in the music business and their sense of what lies ahead for U2. They read Scripture, talk about justifying the expense of producing their next single ("Fire") in the face of global poverty, tell a few jokes and invite feedback from the audience.

Keep in mind that this article doesn't support that this is U2 - in fact I don't think it is, but there is a small possibility since this record provides no info. about the band at all.

Before investigating this record I had no idea that U2 was a Christian band.

This is a Christian record. I can't tell you what the first song is about (who is this Edgar that she's singing to?). The b-side is obviously an attack on Mormons.

Tone and Wave podcast - Episode 5

This episode was just supposed to be a re-cap on the last 3 years of the blog. It was going to focus not on the things that were downloaded most, but things that were downloaded the least. Before I started putting sound clips there were a lot of things that got very little interest based either on my minimal description, or, I don't know...maybe the cover wasn't conducive enough to what you thought a ska cover should look like. Who knows?
I already have episode 6 in the works (it won't take as long as this one did) but I will probably do the re-cap in episode 7.

Speaking of covers..I figure that I had to do this one at some point so here it is. It's cheesy, yes, but it had to be done.

Oh yeah, that little clip at the beginning was John Lennon in 1971 during the rehearsal of How Do You Sleep from the Imagine album. He recommends playing it as a reggae song. In the end it didn't wind up that way. Damn shame that.

Sleep-N-Eat EP (1981)

This compilation from '81 claims a song called "No One Like You" by the Volecanoes. The Volecanoes being the Originals...Arthur Kays back-up band. It says that they went off on their own to do this song, but Arthur Kay helped them on it.
It's odd that this exact recording was released in 1982 under the name Arthur Kay and the Originals with the correct title "No One But You" (which is what the lyrics are).
