The Tonics - Major Problem (1995)

Demo cassette from this British band. I don't know what happened to them but they could have been huge. They had a couple more songs on compilations that I am in the process of obtaining and you can rest assured that I will post them when I get them. Actually, I'll post the whole compilation but I'll remind you of these guys when I do.

The band:
Daz Jackson - vocals
Jason Bagshaw - rhythm guitar and vocals
Wiff Smith - lead guitar
Adi Bates - bass
Gaz Bliss - keyboards
Waine Timms - trumpet and vocals
Stevie B - sax and percussion
Andy Garner - drums
Andy Greenway - mixing desk

Listen to "Major Problem"

First, I'd like to thank Rude Rich who informed me of them because I never heard of them myself.

Second, I tried and tried to get a better version of this recording with different tape players with all different settings, but this is the best I can do. It was mixed with low bass.

1 Major Problem
2 Special Brew
3 Tonic Shuffle
4 The Snake

Big Beat - Boring Monday 7" (1981)

On Monday January 29th, 1979 a 16 year old girl named Brenda Spencer who lived across the street from an elementary school took out her Ruger semi-automatic .22 caliber rifle that her father bought her for Christmas and started shooting at kindergarteners when the principal opened the gates in the morning to let the kids in. Eight children were shot, the principal and a custodian were killed and a police officer who responded to the shooting was shot in the neck.
When asked why she did it Brenda responded "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day."

Bob Geldof was inspired by this line to write the Boomtown Rats song "I Don't Like Mondays" and it was scratched into a wall in the movie "The Breakfast Club".

This was an unknown California ska band who was also inspired to write a song about it. I know nothing else about this band but it took me well over a decade to find a copy of this one. My copy doesn't have the cover but I was able to find a small image of the picture sleeve.

If anybody knows anything else about this band, please let me know.

Brand New World - Six Feet Under 7" (1983)

Discogs has this listed as a UK release but I could have sworn it was one of those great forgotten California ska records. (Not to be confused with the California ska/reggae band from the eighties Brave New World.) I don't actually know. Neither does anybody else, it seems. Great record though.

A - Six Feet Under
B - Monster Love

Ma'SKA - Bare Farvel 7" (1984)

Two Tone sounds from Denmark. I'm guessing this is the only thing they released. I'm also guessing that "bare farvel" means 'simply goodbye'.
