Alerte à Skalibu - Alerte à Skalibu demo tape (1996)

If you are a fan of Lord Skalipsoul you may be surprised at this early recording. He later moved on to do calypso and reggae but this first release is strictly 2 Tone style ska. Lots of covers on this tape but they are done in a unique style. Just when you thought you can't stand to hear another cover version of "Night Boat to Cairo" I think you'll appreciate this one. As Randy Jackson would say - they made it their own, dog.

Alerte à Skalibu was formed in 1996 in Nice and very quickly established itself as one of the premiere  groups in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d´Azur region. It is made up of Thierry on vocals, Benouz the drummer, Mina the basist, Cyro the guitarist, Bruno the pianist, on percussion Fato, Sbe the violinist, Topo the trumpeter, Flo and Guillaume on the saxophone, Mary the flutist and Alex the engineer.
This fine troupe offers a very punchy Ska Roots, tinged with calypso and Dubmusic. They also opened for many artists such as: De la Colline, Spook and the Guay, Gnawa Diffusion, Boulegue's Bigrade, Macka B, Raspigaous as well as the Skatalites, The Scofflaws, Israel Vibration, The Gladiators, Hepcat, LKJ… In 1999, the group released a 4 song EP called "Train to Alphonsoville".

In 2004 the album "In the Studio" was released under the name Lord Skalipsoul & the Skalibu All Stars which included the songs from the EP.

In 2007 Lord Skalipsoul turned to the roots of Jamaican music: Calypso; and under the name of King Selewa (and his Calypsonians) he released two albums and numerous compilations on the prestigious
English label of world music:
Arc Music, until 2009! In 2010, still under the name King Selewa, he signed with the Cezame Music Agency label and released an album “Jamaican Roots”.

It was in 2016 that King Selewa / Lord Skalipsoul decided to return to service under the influence of his very first guitarist, Vlad e.
They thus form THE SKALIPSOULS, a group distilling a mixture of Ska 60's and revival, Rock Steady, Reggae and offer an explosive show combining compositions and adaptations.

Ska-Humbug - On the Floor and More (1994)

Ska Humbug was a ska-punk band who released their demo tape in 1993 called "On the Floor". It had five tracks.

The following year they re-released it with four new songs and they re-titled the demo "On the Floor and More".

I had both tapes at one point and I can assure you that "On the Floor and More" has the exact same recordings as "On the Floor" so there's no need to post both versions but this is the cover to the first version:

The Vendors - No Time, No Money

I have no idea who the Vendors are. Where they come from, who the band members are, what other releases they may have had, and what year this was released are all a mystery.

I'm pretty certain this is from the mid 90s. They have that perfect ska-punk sound that was all the rage in 1997 and the band is as good, if not better, than a lot of ska punk bands from that era.

I can't take credit for finding this incredible rarity. This was shared with us by Marty from Ratgirl Records.

Ratgirl Records specializes in re-releasing hard-to-find punk releases and they know their ska. Check out Ratgirl Record's store,

SKWZBXX

I'm not a big fan of this sort of thing. I call it white funk with some ska influences, but the kids these days are calling it "skronk".

There were a lot of bands in the 90s playing skronk but I never actually met anybody who listens to it. I have a few of these bands' recordings that I have never really felt pressured to post on the blog before but I hate seeing a great post on some other music blogs who post the punk tracks but skip posting the ska songs because they personally don't like ska. I don't want to be like that so I'll post skronk or white-funk even though I don't care for it myself because there just has to be somebody out there who appreciates it. (Anybody?)

As it happens this band SKWZBXX (pronounced 'squeeze-box') is the band who invented the word 'skronk'. In fact it was the trumpet player (coronet player to be correct) Charlton Singleton who combined the words 'ska', 'rock', and 'funk' to describe their sound.

The Rhyth-O-Matics

The Rhyth-O-Matics were one of California's first established ska bands. They released the album "Walking in the Shadow" in 1985 and had a big radio hit in 1988 with a 12" single Skatalation / Trickster.

In 1998 the band leader Jimmy Foot re-released the album and single together on a CD-R with an unreleased track called Kinzenge. This download here is for the CD-R version with the added tracks.

Not only did he re-release his old recordings on his own label Bongo Boy Music, but he recorded a whole new album called Ghost Skankers which was also released on a CD-R with a computer-printed cover which sometimes got stuck to the disc itself.

Then, in  that same year Jimmy Foot collaborated with some musicians under the band name "Sky Rangers" which had more of a 'country' influence and they also released a CD-R on Bongo Boy records which had that same problem of the computer-printed inlay sticking to the CD itself.

Ska Santas

And he has many solo albums. The album Rhythm Addict is mostly a rock-n-roll record but it has a ska song called "Rockin' Ska Man" that is along the lines of the sound from these earlier recordings.

Ska Chou Chou

As a ska blogger I always knew this day would come. I put it off and I put it off but I knew I couldn't hide from it forever. Right now I am reasonably drunk on a Saturday afternoon and I have been doing some quality posts lately so I decided it's time to confront this thing. To just get it out of the way.

Ska Chou Chou. Whatever the hell that means.

If I had to guess I would say it's a play on the term 'popcorn'. See, 'chouchou' is a type of  candied nut that sometimes accompanied candied popcorn (Crackerjacks). But I don't know this is true. I'm just kinda making shit up.

The most popular version of Ska Chou Chou came from the Italian radio DJ Claudio Cecchetto who released his version in 1982 and he played it on the air regularly. The B-side is 'Goodbye Everybody' with him giving a send off at the end.

It was released at least twice with different covers. One of which attributed the song to himself and the DeeJay's Gang. That one was released in 1982. The first one was released in 1981 and listed a song on the cover called Voltare! that was not actually on the record. Ska Chou Chou was labeled as Ska Chou Chou (82)

Claudio Cecchetto e la DeeJay's Gang - Ska Chou Chou 7" (1982)

A - Ska Chou Chou

B - Mr. Bunch (Ciao a Tutti)

This was not the first recording however. It was written and first recorded by Enrico Il Pazzo (Henry the Fool) a year prior in 1981. I can't help but think that Claudio Checchetto may have known Il Pazzo personally.

Enrico Il Pazzo - Ska Chou Chou 7" (1981)

A - Ska Chou Chou

B - Comunque Grazie

Then a Belgium disco band called Baseball did a cover that stripped the song of any semblance of ska that it ever had. Popcorn music was popularized in Belgium so it makes sense that a Belgian band would carry the torch into the 80s.

I once had a copy of the record. The song in this download is of my own rip, but for some reason I didn't keep a copy of the B-side. I remember it being a disco song. If you really have to hear it you can currently get a copy off Discogs for 88-cents.

Baseball - Ska Chou Chou 7" (1984)

A - Ska Chou Chou

B - ...yeah, sorry, there is no B-side. Disco sucks.

Then there's this. It's a children's educational / nursery rhyme channel from Greece. I can't imagine what they are trying to teach kids other than 'ska sucks!'. (Guest appearance from Admiral Ackbar for some reason. I don't know either.) I did not include this in the download. Why would I?

I'm off to the store for more beer. This whole post makes me feel unclean.

Mr. Amir

If you like 80s UK reggae laid back with uplifting lyrics you will like this. I like things a bit more aggressive but I have those days where Mr. Amir is just what I want to hear.

Aside from these two EPs he did one actual album called "Dawning" which I have a copy of but my copy is a bit scuffed up and it skips all over the place. If you want to eventually buy yourself a copy of the album and you want to hear what it sounds like first I might be able to help you, but if you want a download where you can enjoy the songs all the way through, I can't help you with that. I may replace my copy someday but I'm in no hurry to do so. Listen to these two records. The album is just more of the same.

The Restrictors

The Restrictors were a mod/ska band based in and around Darlington, UK from 1984 through late 1986/early 1987.

They were active in playing live shows and had several line-up changes but, sadly, they didn't record much and God only knows if there are any recordings of any live shows.

The only proof we have of their sound are three songs that were recorded in 1985. Two were featured on the compilation "On a Wing and a Prayer" and one extra song that didn't make it onto the compilation or anywhere else and is only now available for us to hear thanks to the magic of the internet.

These three songs make up their entire discography.

Three members of the band started  The G-Men so it wouldn't be too crazy to assume that maybe a song or two from the G-Men may have been recycled from The Restrictors. I'm not stating that as a fact, just supposin'.

The graphics in this download are from a sheet that was included in the compilation. Different copies of the record had inserts for different bands. I was lucky enough to get one from The Restrictors in my copy. I scanned it in greyscale and black & white and I can't tell which one looks better so I included both in the download.

From the back cover: "Man In The Street began when Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones encouraged Bobby Keys (Saxophone - Stones, Eric Clapton, etc.) to travel to Jamaica to record the rhythm tracks for a special project that eventually grew into a sort of "showcase" effort. The Dynamic Studio in Kingston, JA, Devonshire Studio in Los Angeles and A & R Studio in New York City were chosen for their splendid sound and proximity to the artists, Jerry Williams, the vocalist for the project, is a long time friend of Bobby Keys' and is a songwriter for CBS. The finest session men in Jamaica appear on this unique and soulful record... Have a listen and you'll agree."

If you caught me off guard and asked me about this band I would say that they released more than just this but it seems this is almost everything they recorded. They did have an earlier promo/demo tape but that same exact tape was re-released as this self-titled CD posted here. Aside from that they have a song called  "Steppin' Up" on the 1998 Pinball Records compilation called The Pinball Family and Distant Relatives which I have included in this download.
