Pinhead - You Don't Like Me, Do Ya? (1982)

This band was from Burlington, Vermont. The band was an outlet for artist Dug Nap.

The band's sound should appeal to fans of Talking Heads and they have just a tiny splash of Boingo.

There are two or three ska-influenced tracks on this record. One of which "Where are You?" was re-recorded for an EP of the same name that was released a year later. That record also included a re-recording of the song "Citizen" but was titled "Be a good Citizen" on the second release.

Duck Duck - Sticky's Children (1992)

I'm not certain but I think these guys were from Massachusetts. They recorded lots of songs that they used to dub to blank tapes so it's hard to say how many songs they actually recorded. They played different styles of music and put on a great live show.

This might be their only "official" release but it's really more of a compilation of songs recorded between 1989 and 1992. There's even a track from 1988 from a previous incarnation of the band when they were called The Toast'Em Boys.

Ska purists will probably not like most of the CD but it is extremely rare and fans who saw them live back in the days will love this post.

Loose Ties - Loose Ties 12" (1985)

This was a band from Massachusetts that played in Boston quite a bit.

I'll be totally honest here. I don't like this record very much. I really try to avoid saying anything negative about a band on this blog but look...

The first two or three songs are great. "Last Time" is a cover of the Rolling Stones song and it wasn't done in a ska style, but was done exactly as the Beat (English Beat) would have done it. The second song is a ska song and I love it. The third song is pretty decent.

If these three songs were released as a 45 or as a 12" I would say this is an impressive release.
These are the 3 songs on the A-side.

But, then, we have the B-side.

I don't care for any of the songs on the B-side. In fact some of the songs skip and I don't care enough to re-rip them.

A-side - great record.

B-side - pointless crap.

I posted this Canadian band's first album which was a cassette only release HERE and I really thought it was a notable ska release. I wondered if this band ever released anything else and some astute folks pointed me in the direction of this CD which was released a year after their great ska cassette. I have to say I like the cassette much more than I like this. There is some ska here, but not much.

I want to note that the song "I Told You Many Times" by Kim and the Echoes is the same song as Kim Stevenson and the Echoes - "Going with Him" from the first Roots, Branch, and Stem compilation and the song "All That I Need" by Dunia and Bestabee is the some song as "Come to My Rescue" by Dunia and Django with the Stable Boys from the same comp. Same recordings with some slight post production differences.


 

Ventilators - Desolation in Me 7" (1993)

The Ventilators released their first album "Blue Beat Train" in 1993 on the Swiss label Tudor Rock. In 1995 the great Pork Pie Records put out the album "The Ventilators" which was Blue Beat Train, three tracks from their EP "Golden Love" and a few other studio recordings.

The version of "Desolation in Me" that was on both of those releases is a re-recorded version of the song that appeared on this single.

Quito & the Sandgang - Hot Love 12" (1983)

Quito Rymer is a musician from the Virgin Islands who has released several recordings over the years starting in 1987...

...wait...1987...?

This record here is from 1983 and there is no information about it online. Even Quito doesn't acknowledge that it exists.

There are three tracks:

B1 - Still on My Mind
B2 - Call Me Baby

"Still on My Mind" is a straight-forward reggae tune taken from the Bob Marley play book but the other two tracks have a new wave/rock-n-roll sound to them. Perfect for the early 80s post-2Tone era.

Great record all around. You can see how superior it is to his other releases.

You can ask him why he doesn't flaunt this monumental recording in person when you next vacation in the Virgin Islands at Quito's Gazebo & Inn.

Scram - Stand Up (1987) [REPOST] & Kingsessing Trials (1990)

This trio (Matt Mungan - vocals and guitar, Greg Mungan - bass and vocals, and Craig Heim - drums / percussion) were pretty well known in Philadelphia in the mid 80s but they have pretty much disappeared from people's minds since then. It might have to do with them changing their sound and releasing their second album Kingsessing Trails in 1990 when they went the route of the Red Hot Chili Pepper bandwagon and experimented with soul, funk, and jazz sounds. 
I like this one though. This is their first. Two of the songs on this record have appeared elsewhere: Something to Cling to was on a 1986 7" compilation called That Was Then...This is Now!, and the John Lennon cover Imagine that was released on "Another Shot for Bracken"

Little Murders is a prolific mod/power pop band from Australia. They put out lots of albums but I think this is the song "She Said" from this EP is their only true ska song. They dabbled with the ska sound in a couple other songs and I included the "Take Me, I'm Yours" single in this download because the b-side has a very prominent ska sound even though it's not really a ska song.

...and, no, the a-side is NOT a cover of the Squeeze song that was covered by Tim Curry.

Difficult Music - Not the Kind of Boy 7" (1984)

This Dutch band put out this one single. The A-side is a decent new wave rock song but the B-side is an instrumental - a saxophone/keyboard/trumpet-heavy ska rendition of Erik Satie's Gnossienne Nr.1. You never really see this kind of arrangement for an eighties ska single.

Bette Bright [REPOST]

Bette Bright is married to Suggs from Madness. She was formerly in a band called Deaf School before she teamed up with Glen Matlock of Sex Pistols and members of Clive Langer and the Boxes to form The Illuminations. Clive Langer produced Madness' early albums, and the Illuminations keyboardist Ben Barson is brother of Madness' keyboardist Mike Barson.

Bette was also sang for the Dutch post-punk/pop band Gruppo Sportivo and she appeared in The Great Rock and Roll Swindle as well as Madness' video for "One Better Day"

Yeah, the 2 singles "Hello, I am Your Heart" and "Some Girls Have All the Luck"
are on the full-length - both A and B sides...same versions, but damnit, I'm a collector so I have the singles and therefore I feel more 'complete'. I trust you understand.

There is a bit of a ska influence in the later recordings, but she was not exactly a ska artist. Even still, her version of "Hold on, I'm Coming" is sexy and worth the listen.

Painted Saints - Kampai! (1986)

The is one of the best punk-ska records you've never heard. One slow punk anthem, two up-tempo punk rock songs, a fast ska-punk song, and one of the best eighties ska songs I've ever heard.
This band was from Connecticut and I don't know anything else about them.
I say this a lot, but I can't believe this record isn't more well known.

Isa Wah - One Human Band (1983)

Rare California reggae/ska.
The band was created by Buddy Tokes who performed in other reggae/dub bands and has released lots of material as a solo artist.

HERE's a performance and interview with Buddy Tokes and his band Hiro.

Hopping Penguins

The Hopping Penguins were formed in Halifax, Canada in 1982. However the didn't really get going till they relocated to Toronto.
The band is fronted by Peter Baylis, with Andrew Lordly on sax, Gary Edwards on drums, Basil Chaisson on guitar, Pete King on bass, Brad Conrad on guitar and guest appearances by Bruce Vickery, lead vocalists and percussionist. Members of the band hail from different parts of Canada.

With a repertoire of Marley-style reggae, soulful ska, straight ahead funk, rock and roll and rhythm and blues they bring an eclectic and diverse pastiche to every show. After a decade of playing ska, reggae and rock tunes on the Toronto club scene, the 7-piece band finally took the dive to try and capture their frenetic energy on tape. Cover versions of Billy Paul's "Me and Mrs. Jones" and Jimi Hendrix' "Hey Joe" highlighted their 1992 debut 'Trombone Chromosome'.

Tootin' Ska Moon - Revenge of the Dragon (1995)

This Welsh band released two cassettes before they put out their only album in 1995. There is one song from each cassette that is not on this cd but otherwise, this is pretty much everything they have released.
