Beat Around The Bush - Cha Cha Hula (1990)

It's been over a decade since I've done a podcast but I recently (about half a year ago) was inspired to do a new podcast. My old podcast focused on well-known bands doing the one off ska or reggae song. The novelty of it ruined the quality. I listened to my old podcast and it was horrible.

With the new podcastI decided to forget the popular bands playing terrible ska songs and focus on the unknown bands playing great ska songs. I put together an episode and this was the first song. It's by a California band who put out a ska/reggae demo tape in 1990 before they faded away. This is the best song on that tape.

I'm never actually going to finish the podcast so I'm going to post the one-off songs that would have been on the podcast.

This is the first one: "Cha Cha Hula" by Beat Around The Bush.

Cold Snacks

Cold Snacks was a third wave ska punk band from Florida. They had a female singer and were aiming for more pop than punk. They never released anything officially in their years of playing but they did record a 7" EP that never saw the light of day as well as this CD-R demo CD.

The primary band members eventually realized how hard it is to maintain a horn section so they formed a new punk band called Damsel In This Dress who also didn't release anything (or did they? I don't know. Prove me wrong.)

Joe & The Originals - Bad Boys 12'' (1988)

All I know about this band is that they are from Italy and this is probably the only thing they ever released. I had a copy of this record for many many years and I never posted it because my copy sounded terrible. I eventually got another copy and this new one sounds even worse. I thought the first one was compressed (when you stack records on top of each other in a pile instead of side by side) but I'm thinking that this record just wasn't produced/mixed right and that's just how it sounds.

This is a ska/reggae band and, like a lot of bands from Europe in this era, the vocals are hard to get used to. As an ignorant Yank I appreciate that all the lyrics are in English (The language of The U.S.A! - God's language!)  but I still can't quite grasp them.

Ironically my favorite song on this record is "Forty Minutes of Fire" which is the least ska/reggae but it's a great song. I included on an episode of the Tone and Wave Podcast that I never actually released.

Today I re-ripped this record and even though the vinyl looks beautiful and unblemished in any way it sounds atrocious. I am frustrated and I don't care so I'm posting my latest rip. It sucks but at least you can hear these rare ska songs in shit quality.

The only good thing about this new record is the cover. My other copy didn't have the hand-made picture sleeve.

A - Bad Boys

B1 - Forty Minutes of Fire

B2 - And God Created the Woman

Ms. B. Haven - Get It 7" (1981)

This was a female-fronted new wave band from California. This might be the only thing they ever released. The keyboard player Sue Palmer put out some other music but I don't think anything else was recorded with this band. I'll be happy to be proven wrong.

The A-side is a new wave song. The B-side is a reggae song that sounds very similar to Judith Ann-Marie

I should add that my copy doesn't have the sleeve so I respectfully stole all of the images from Discogs. My copy is very very crackly and I spent a lot of time trying to edit out the pops and crackles. You wouldn't know it by listening to it. I probably could have done better if I spent more time on it but oh well. There's only so much time in a day.

A - Get It

B - Sexuality/Normality
