Spliff Riff

This was a British ska/reggae band who only put out three records in their time. All three were singles. No album.

I have managed to collect all three records plus a few songs I found on the internet.

The band was lead by Julian Johnson. All of the extra songs I found online came from his YouTube page. He was in the band I-Jay and the Reggae Revivals and you can hear their songs on his YouTube page

Seven of these songs came from my own vinyl rips. The rest came from YouTube.

The song "More Today Than Yesterday" is a cover of the American band Spiral Starecase. They had a hit with this song in early 1969.

1 In the Night Time

2 It Doesn't Matter

3 More Today Than Yesterday

4 You Shook Up My World

5 Wildflower

6 New Ska

7 Rumours of War

8 In the Night Time 12" version

9 Take Jah

10 More Today Than Yesterday 12" version

11 Suffering in the Land (live)

12 Conquer Me (live)

Womega - Two Red Lights 7'' (1980)

This was a progressive rock band from Belgium who released one album and a single in the 70s and then, in 1980, they released this single with two ska songs. I actually have their other releases and nothing they did before sounds anything like this record. I don't know how their fans took it, but this was their final release.

My copy looks pretty good but it sounds atrocious. I may replace it someday. Pardon my crackles.

The sleeve I have is in really bad condition so I stole this image from eBay. The lettering on the cover is supposed to be white.

A - Two Red Lights

B - Emma

Enormous - My Type (1998)

This was an established British indie-rock band who changed their name and this is the first thing they released under the new name. The title track on this EP is a ska song.

I have a feeling this post will be taken down pretty quickly. Get it while you can.

Godzilla / Luana Point

I'm not entirely sure where this band is from so I'll put it like this:

This is a European band who started out with the name Godzilla but, as you know, there was already a band called Godzilla. And when I say there was already a band I meant there were many many bands with that name. In my own neighborhood there was a punk band called Godzilla (RIP Jocko!) so the band put out a few songs using the name "God & Zilla" but when they put out their first release they boldly went with the name Godzilla.

I don't know what happened but between their first record and their second they changed their name. They were no longer Godzilla nor were they God & Zilla but they changed their name entirely to "Luana Point". They released that second record then they disappeared.

I don't know who they were or what happened to them but here is everything I have by them: two singles and three compilation tracks. Lots of laid back and mostly instrumental ska. For fans of Ocean 11.

Godzilla - Get Away from Montego Bay (1998)

1 The Way to Luana Point

2 Mio

3 Yes, I'm Rocking

Luana Point - Two is Better than One (2000)

A - Les Liaisons Dangereuses

B - In Flagranti Ska

Skabba the Hutt

From Wiki and Discogs and anywhere else online that ever mentioned this band:

Skabba the Hutt were a Ska punk band that featured former The Bravery frontman/songwriter Sam Endicott on bass and keyboard-player John Conway, CSI: Miami actor Jonathan Togo, actor/filmmaker Will Carlough, session drummer Chris Markwood, solo-musician/voiceover-artist Brian Grosz and musician/illustrator Seth Berkowitz.

After some members went on to form The Bravery others continued on as a ska band called El Conquistadors. They released one 5-track self-titled CD before calling it quits.

On a personal note, I was a fan of The Bravery before I even knew of their ska past.

I previously posted the demo tape but the self-titled tape is being posted for the first time on this blog. Neither the demo nor the self-titled tape are my own rips and I graciously thank the people who ripped these tapes and all those who share them.

Hot Tongs - Démo (1999)

This is a band from France who didn't have any official release, only two demos. This one titled "Démo" and one before this titled "La Démo".

Many years ago I saw a video of them and in my memory they played traditional ska in an aggressive style. I was excited to find this tape but it doesn't sound the way I was hoping it would sound based on my memory of them. It's good, but I'm thinking the first demo might be better. I don't know though because I've never heard it. If anybody out there has a copy please let me know.

Here's a full live set.

 1 Wicked Style

2 Recordate

3 Trop de Violence

4 La Boite te Nuit

Nostrilsaurus

This was a punk band from Gurnee, Illinos (about an hour from Chicago so they're known as a Chicago band) who dabbled with some ska and the slightest bit of funk in the years leading up to the third wave. They have a very original sound and, in my opinion, their best stuff was the songs they had on compilations but the two records they made have some poignant moments as well.

This download is for both 7" records and all five of their compilation tracks. My version of the song "90210" isn't very good but you'll be happy to know a better version of it and others is available on a collection called "Hell Bent for Pleather" that's on Bandcamp.

Nostrilsaurus - Whooooa!!! 7" (1993)

1 Kwazar

2 You Too

3 It Sucks 2BU

4 Poke Your Eyes Out

Nostrilsaurus - Don't Forget the Little People (1994)

1 Everything

2 Crazy 8

3 One Million Little Morons

4 That Girl

Compilation Tracks

* One Step Forward

* He and She

* Don't Rock the Boat

*Do You Remember?
