This is the End??

Buster Shuffle is NOT to blame for my account being suspended. The actual email I got that informed me of the suspension stated that it was due to having a file titled Buster Shuffle.
I don't think it was unreasonable to jump to the conclusion that I did, but I admit I shouldn't have been so quick to accuse the band itself.

I got an email from them (basically what they wrote in the comments) which ended with them saying that my post accusing them of this is untrue and unfair. They are absolutely right and this is my open apology. It was done out of anger and I never bothered to even try to contact them first to see if this was their doing.

I'm still debating whether or not to buy their new cd. I'd hate to think that I'd be handing my money over to the record label or distributors who did this. I do recommend that if you are able to get either album from the band itself to do so. The first one was great so I imagine the new one will not disappoint.
(I'm not just trying to do damage control here, I actually am a fan and I do think their music should be heard, that's why I did the post in the first place.)

As for the blog...I'm still not sure what to do. Half of the emails I get are people asking me to reupload things. If I keep it going the way it is I'll be getting emails for every file at some point. I don't have a lot of time for the blog as it is right now. I still have a lot of rarities that I want to share with you. (I just realized the other day that I have never posted the Lodgers demo tape yet), and in the near future I'll have more time than I do now but when I do have time to sit at the computer the bulk of the time is spent answering emails. Now, with the added task of having to re-upload everything, I won't have much time at all to post new things.

Ultra rare release from this California band. I can't tell you a single thing about them.
A couple of okay reggae songs on the B-side but the A-side is amazingly good. I can't believe this isn't a popular song.

I.D. - I Have Something to Say to You 7'' (1984) [LINK FIXED]

I'm pretty sure this band was from Canada. Can't find anything about them online. I know this record goes for a pretty penny on eBay every now and then and I'll admit that it's not a ska song even though when you do see it on eBay on those rare occasions the seller likes to say that it's a ska song. It's a piano driven new wave song with a bit of a ska rhythm to it and I shouldn't be posting it on T&W but I am because of how rare it is and because of how good it is. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Eddie Vedder - Reggae EP

"Reggae Woman" is a song Eddie Vedder wrote in 1988. This version was recorded before he was in Pearl Jam. The other two songs here are just Eddie singing solo in between Pearl Jam songs. These are both Bob Marley songs and they are basically a capella, no reggae music behind him. The other members of Pearl Jam don't share his love for that reggae groove it seems.

SOTD: Tackhead - Ska Trek (1989)

Remember the song "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang? They had a group of guys backing them up called Fats Comet who were also known as Tackhead. These are the same guys backing up Grandmaster Flash on White Lines and The Message.

They released their first 7" in 20 years on November 11th, 2011. Its a cover of Bob Marley's Exodus. Here's a remix of the new track.

It's from an album of new music that's supposed to be released in 2012. Stay tuned to their Official Site for news on that.

They released the album Friendly as a Hand Grenade in 1989 and the first track on the album was "Ska Trek"

Culture Club

Culture Club was a rock-n-roll quartet from Nashville, Tennessee which featured a pretty young lady on lead vocals named Boy George

First there was the Sex Pistols, then Malcom McLaren took Adam out of Adam and the Ants and inserted a 13 year old girl into the band and called them Bow Wow Wow but, when that band started to waver, he threw in a teenage Irish transvestite named George O'Dowd to sing lead. That didn't work out so well - Anabella didn't want him there and the fans didn't want him there - he was booed off the stage.

Ironically there was another member of Adam and the Ants - a drummer named Jon Moss who started his first band called Pig Williams in 1975 with his friend Nick Feldman (who later found fame in the band Wang Chung) who was not in Bow Wow Wow because he was busy playing with Shane MacGowan's band The Nips at the time before replacing Rat Scabies as the drummer for The Damned. He was advised by an unnamed friend that Bow Wow Wow's new singer Lieutenant Lush was calling himself "Boy George" and he started a new band called Praise of Lemmings.
Jon Moss joined Praise of Lemmings and they changed their name to Culture Club.

Culture Club started out as a reggae band but most of their reggae sound was overshadowed during production in favor of a pop sound.

A lot of their music had reggae influences but they never released a straightforward reggae song in their heyday. It wasn't until 1999 when they released the album Don't Mind If I Do when they had a minor hit with a cover of the Dolly Parton song "Your Kisses are Charity"

They even performed this song live with Dolly herself

Cornerstone 96-98

This band was out of Vancouver, WA and recorded an album in the late 90's that never quite got finished or released, until just a few days ago. This band has a unique style with the lead singer who plays an upright bass. One more reason to pick it up, proceeds from the album will benefit The National Brain Tumor Society in the name of Joshua Dalton, the bands founder and bassist who is battling cancer. Although the band has been broken up for many years now, their music can now be properly enjoyed and remembered.

The Choice - Candy 7" (1983)

The Choice was a post punk / new wave band from Ithaca New York. Their set was comprised mostly of covers: "Should I Stay or Should I Go" (Clash), "Psycho Killer" (Talking Heads), "What I Like About You" (Romantics), "Freedom of Choice" (Devo), They also played some Rolling Stones and a B52's cover or two etc.



The band was started by two brothers from Florida Jay and mark Mendelson. Jay worked at a T.V. center in Owego and was able to use some equipment to make a couple of videos. One for their original song "Life of the Party", and another for "Technician". They did release a CD that had these two songs and a few more studio tracks with several live songs. I have never come across this cd.

You may have heard the name Ziggy Marley before (from what I hear his dad was a musician of some sort. He used to hang out with Mick Jagger)

In 2006 Ziggy was feeling the 2 Tone vibe when he recorded this song for his second solo album (without the Melody Makers) Love is My Religion.

SOTD: William Shatner and Toots Hibbert cover the Police

Remember the Twilight Zone episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" about the man who was on an airplane and kept seeing a man on the wing of the plane? The main actor was a guy named William Shatner who later went on to find fame in a TV show called TJ Hooker with a woman named Heather Locklear who was married to members of Motley Crue and Bon Jovi after Charles in Charge broke up with her.

Anyways...this TJ Hooker guy went on to do commercials for an online based airplane ticket agency, which is ironic considering his beginnings. He made enough from his commercials to fund one of the most...um...interesting album of 80s cover songs. On this album he enlisted the help of a down-and-out nobody named Toots Hibbert (normally I would never say a negative thing about Toots - he's the guy who sang Split Personality - but he sank pretty low on this one and I feel like my shit talking is justified).

Cyndi Lauper - Ska EP

Cyndi Lauper never did a ska EP but, if she did, it would be this.

This was supposed to be my SOTD but there were a couple to choose from. These songs were intended to be used in my next podcast but I couldn't pick which one I thought represented Cyndi Lauper properly.

She released her first album She's so Unusual in 1984 when she was 31 years old - although she did release a record with her band Blue Angel. (When she was 24 she damaged her vocal chords and was told by a doctor that she would never sing again).

She's so Unusual featured the song "Witness" which was overlooked but remained a favorite of Cyndi's.
It was the B-side to several of her singles off that album starting with "She Bop" (a song about masturbation - using the 'self-service' pumps), I'll Kiss You, and All Through the Night which was intended to be a reggae song but was changed by her producers before it was recorded. When she performed All Through the Night live she performed it in a reggae style as it was intended:

...then, again in 1986 Witness was the B-side to the Change of Heart single from her second album True Colors.

After that she didn't delve much into the ska/reggae sound until 10 years later with her 1996 album Sisters of Avalon when she recorded the song Brimstone and Fire


Then, 10 years after that, she recorded a live version of All Through the Night with Shaggy. (Don't ask my opinion about this version - I will not say good things)

SOTD: Where There's Gold - The ska stylings of...Seal?

I already did a SOTD for today but I didn't do one for yesterday, so doing 2 for today is allowed according to the Tone and Wave handbook rule 54-46.

Seal got in touch with his ska side on his 4th album in 2003 which was titled "Seal" (weren't they all?) with this song "Where There's Gold". It's a pretty good song but it didn't fit into any of my past podcasts.

SOTD: Corrupt Citizen - Talk is Cheap

I don't remember how this song fell into my hands but I've had it for a while now and always wanted to put it on a podcast. It just never felt right in the podcasts I have done in the past.

The band is called Corrupt Citizens and I know absolutely nothing about them except that they were from Arizona. Can't find diddly squat else on the internet except that this song was recorded in 1983 and was released on a 7" on Bad Stain Records called "The Mongolian Wild Turkey Baby Back Rib and Cheesy, but yet oh-so Spicy Stuffed Jalapeno Homemade Chili and Waffle Cookout and Square Dancing Barbecue Finals Volume 2" which was limited to 1000 copies. (HERE).

Keep in mind that these guys were out a few years before Operation Ivy...before there was such a thing as third wave.

I just realized a couple days ago that it's been almost a year since I did a podcast. I keep telling myself that I'll be doing another one any day now. I'll probably keep telling myself that for another year.

Let's face it...I ain't doing another podcast.

I do have this folder of songs that I intend to use in a podcast someday but I have to be realistic here and say that it's just not going to happen. I don't have the free time I used to have when I first started this blog and the bit of free time I do have is drinkin time. I have learned over the years to not internet whilst drunk.


So what do I do with this folder full of oddities? A mixtape? Nah, mixtapes don't have any personality.

Most of the time I post a 7" there's only one good song on there anyway so, in a sense, that's the song of that day.

Some of the songs are going to be great and you'll be glad I posted it. Some will outright suck. I have learned a long time ago that I don't really know what will be popular and what won't so I'll just put it all out there and let you decide.

Aerolíneas Federales - Largate 7" (1989)

This was a Spanish pop/punk band. They released 5 albums and several singles. This single was from the album Echame Sifón but the B-side was not on an album...and the B-side is why I'm posting this.

It reminds me of some other song that I just can't seem to place. It's very subtle but if you listen closely you might hear it too.

Scram - Stand Up (1987)

This trio (Matt Mungan - vocals and guitar, Greg Mungan - bass and vocals, and Craig Heim - drums / percussion) were pretty well known in Philadelphia in the mid 80s but they have pretty much disappeared from people's minds since then. It might have to do with them changing their sound and releasing their second album Kingsessing Trails in 1990 (maybe 1991?) when they went the route of the Red Hot Chili Pepper bandwagon and experimented with soul, funk, and jazz sounds. At least that's what I hear - I have never actually heard the second album because I have never been able to find it.
I like this one though. This is their first. Two of the songs on this record have appeared elsewhere: Something to Cling to was on a 1986 7" compilation called That Was Then...This is Now!, and the John Lennon cover Imagine that was released on "Another Shot for Bracken"

004 (pronounced "Double-O Four") was from Utah and they were known for playing the ON Klub every now and then. Their drummer later went on to play with 4 Non Blondes before her tragic death in 1997.

Rhythm Riot 12'' (1987)

I've put this off for a while because I was hoping to tie up some loose ends. I know that the lead vocalist for Rhythm Riot - Andy Spalaris - was in an earlier San Francisco area ska band before this band. I know they had a female vocalist and they played more upbeat than Rhythm Riot. They had a name along the lines of "The Rudies" or maybe something with "Pressure" in the name. You know, something absolutely ska sounding.
The internet is stingy about the information regarding this band. I hope one of you dear Tone and Wavers out there have some clue.

(David Snyder who plays guitar on one song on this record may have been a full fledged member of the other band)(...oh, and the lead singer was a black woman who only had one name...like Sade or Madonna)

Anyway...this is a nice bit of 80s pop reggae from California. The band is pretty much a duo consisting of the aforementioned Andy Spalaris and bassist Otto Waldorf with over a dozen guest musicians including William Gregory who played sax with Tears for Fears.

Matt Bianco - Get Put of Your Lazy Bed 7'' (1983)

Matt Bianco is the name of the band. There is nobody in the band named Matt. They were from Britain and they released a lot of music in the 80s and 90s but most of what they did sounds more like Ricky Marin than this. This song was on their first album "Whose Side are You on?" from 1984. There was another song on that album called "Sneaking Out the Back Door" that was along the lines of "Get Out of Your Lazy Bed" which I included .
Back up vocals were provided by Polish pop star Basia. She was a member of Matt Bianco before she went off on her own. She released her first album called "Time and Tide" in 1987 and it contained a song called "How Dare You" that had a sound reminiscent of these early Matt Bianco tunes. I have included that in this download as well.
