Jadanstik - Doe Maar...Zolang Het Nog Kan! 7" (1983)

I'm not very fluent in Dutch but I'm guessing the title here translates to "Go Ahead...Make My Day". Both songs are ska. The A-side is in Dutch, the B-side is in English. Both songs are really good.

There is a very successful Dutch ska band called Doe Maar but this has nothing to do with that band. I have all of Doe Maar's 80s discography. If anybody gives a damn, let me know and I'll post it.

Mod Philo - What Went On 7" (1981) [LINK UPDATED 09/11/2016]

There's a personal story behind this one. Many moons ago somebody sent me a sound clip of this record and I've been looking for it ever since. The thing is that their sound file was labeled as "MAd" Philo" and I have been looking for Mad Philo ever since - with no luck. I asked your friend and mine Bristolboy if he had it. I didn't really expect that he would but I was hoping that he had at least heard about it and could give me some more info, and could you believe it, he sent me the files. All 3 tracks and the scans.    

I had no idea that these guys were from California. I am compiling a 'rare ska from California in the 80s' set and I'm up to about 60 songs so far and I will definitely be including this band in that post.

 Now that I know how to spell their name correctly I should have an easier time getting a copy of my own. As a record collector you have to love that packaging.

Beatroots - Unnecessary War 7" (1982)

 "In the late 70’s Flashback began life, in Cardiff, as a Reggae/Funk outfit.

With the early success of UB40 and the rise of Two-Tone, the decision was made to concentrate on Reggae, and the band’s name was changed to The Beatroots to better reflect the new direction.

1982 saw the independent release of the Bob Lamb-produced tracks Unnecessary War and I Wanna Dance With You. Both songs were written by J. Henry.

The band split around 1983 due to business disagreements."

Chainska Brassika [London] - Bad Habits (2015)

Incredible British ska done right. This song is a prelude to their upcoming debut album that should be released later this year. It was released on April 1st and is available at Bandcamp - name your price.

Lou and the Miamis - Vamos a la Playa 7" (1983)

I don't know the whole story on this one but this record has been released two different times with different names. Lou Deprijck produced and/or performed on this record and it was released under the name Lou and the Hollywood Bananas but, although it was a minor hit, it was not included on The Best of Lou and the Hollywood Bananas.

It's actually the b-side that makes this record worthy of this blog.

The a-side is not ska. It is a cover of a song by the Italian Duo Righeira. It was sung in Spanish and is considered a summer anthem but the lyrics are about a nuclear bomb exploding in the ocean.

The Lotions 12" EP (1981) [REPOST*]

I know what you're thinking..."who's this Rastaman?" Right? That's what you're thinking. Well, I have a surprise for you - this man is not Jamaican, no, he's actually from Texas.
His name is Alan Monsarrat and he started the first ska/reggae band in Texas.
I have not found any information that would lead me to believe that they released anything other than this EP.

However, Alan himself is currently heading Austin's premiere reggae band Mau Mau Chaplains. (As well as the band Stop the Truck)

The Targets - Unity Beat 12" [REPOST]

In 1983 the Southern California band The Targets released this EP. The record and sleeve says very little about this band and, therefore, I know very little about them. This release was on a label called American Standard Records based in Torrance California - I can't find any info on them either.
The Targets sound is a little bit reminiscent of The English Beat with a bit of The Donkey Show and even a slight bit of Blondie. Not strictly ska but they fit perfectly in the 2 Tone era.

Heavyball interview

 Heavyball has a new single that will be released in the next few weeks. It's a cover of "Smalltown Boy" by Bronski Beat. I was able to ask the band a few questions and, in the spirit of those good old magazines we all grew up reading, I asked the band members to each pick 10 songs they recommend that you, the reader, need to listen to more often. I have made their selections into a downloadable mixtape.


How did the band form? 
Johnny: "Matt and Habs are brothers and I grew up down the road from them in Nottingham in the UK. So we have been friends from childhood. When we all ended up in London a few years back we decided to get together and make the kind of music that we would want to listen to. 'Stone Cold' Tom Frost is a London boy and he joined us last year on guitar to give us a fuller sound."

Thanks for the Heavyball mix tape. Can you tell us a bit more about your musical influences? 
Big Face: "We really enjoyed getting that list of songs together. As you'd expect, there is a strong nod to 80s ska, The Selecter, The Specials, Madness plus a bit of Northern Soul. A lot of the old Jamaican stuff has always been a big influence on us so Toots, Jimmy Cliff and The Pioneers were always going to make the team."

Habs: "We love story telling in songs. It's a range of genres but The Kinks, Blondie, Kenny Rogers and hip hop acts like Black Twang all do that really well. Sometimes though it's less about telling a story and more about tearing the place up and howling at the moon....that's when you need to hear something like Baba O'Riley".

Johnny: "We have also included a couple of ska-influenced bands that we have played with in the UK that we really like. The Glenn Hodge Banned are a fantastic act based in London while Junior Bill and the Scallies are from Cardiff...they're both definitely worth having a listen to." 

How did you come up with the name Heavyball?
Johnny: "Years ago, I used to work in a woodyard. I wasn't exactly 'Employee of the Month' material and the boss hated me. One morning I accidentally drove a fork lift truck into a wall because I was distracted by what was written on the crate I was lifting. The crate had 'HEAVYBALL' written on it, but I never found out what was inside because I was sacked five minutes later."

What's coming up for Heavyball?
Frosty: "We're releasing our cover of Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat this April which has already been getting some great radio play in the UK. Sameer Patel, who directed the video for Black Eye Friday is on board again to work with us so we're really excited about that. Unbelievably, Jimmy Somerville, who wrote it, has got in touch to say that our version was the best cover ever!"

Why did you choose to do a version of Bronski Beat? 
Big Face: "It's the only cover we ever play at shows and it has always gone down really well. It's a fantastic song in it's own right, about being an outsider, and really it gets to the heart of what we what we aspire to in our writing. We want our music to say something but, if it isn't catchy and you can't get up and dance to it, we don't think its worth doing."

Marshall Doktors - The Worrying Kind 7" (1980)

Not really a ska record but more like a classic rock-n-roll record - the sort of songs that the Cramps taught you. But this is often sold as a ska record and I can see why. It does have a ska feel to it. This record was intended to be 50s style but it was put out during the dawn of the 80s so the two styles were meshed together perfectly. If you listen to the b-side first you won't get it. But, if you listen to the a-side first, and then the b-side, you'll hear the ska influence.

Teenage Heart is an independent record label based out of Kansas City, MO. Founded in 2014 by filmmaker Johnny Starke and Modern Life Is War vocalist Jeffrey Eaton . Starting out as a distro for self released Reggae, Ska, and Punk records, 2015 found the label releasing it's first material on the Teenage Heart imprint.

SOTD - Izzy Stradlin from Guns 'N Roses - Can't Hear 'Em (1992)

Heavy metal and reggae/ska don't mix very well. Sepultura did a cover of Bob Marley's "War" but they weren't even trying. David Lee Roth did try with his song "No Big 'Ting" but it didn't work too well. The popularity of third wave ska even inspired GWAR to use horns.


Before all that, and years before there was a third wave Izzy Stradlin left Guns 'N Roses to become a solo artist. His first solo album "Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds" was released in 1992 and it featured a cover of Pressure Drop which was done in a straightforward hard rock style - with a touch of reggae at the end. But then he released the 4-track Pressure Drop EP which contained the same rockin' Pressure Drop and two other rock and roll tracks but it also had a song called "Can't Hear 'Em" which was not available anywhere else and it was a complete diversion from anything else he had ever released. It sounded like this:

PETER AND THE TEST TUBE BABIES announced as the headline band for Friday18^th September 2015 at Undercover Festival III.

Peter and the Test Tube Babies formed in the small town of Peacehaven (Near Brighton), in 1978 by Del Strangefish and Peter Bywaters. Due to their humorous tongue-in-cheek lyrics, they have been considered part of the Punk Pathetique subgenre. Peter and the Test Tube Babies were first featured in Sounds magazine in July 1980, and after a John Peel Radio One session, made their vinyl debut on the Brighton compilation album Vaultage 78.

Fast forward to 2015 and they are still playing live and as popular on the scene as ever.

The Set - Nothing to Lose (1981)

The Set were from Birmingham and, outside of that, I know nothing else about them.
There was a 7" version of this record that didn't include the song Situation Desperation and it had a shorter version of Nothing to Lose. (The 7" version of Nothing to Lose is included in this download.)

The back cover doesn't give much information but my copy was signed by the band so I have a few names to go off of to find more info but they're first names: Phill, Mick, and a few I can't discern. They don't help much but I appreciate one band member's signature. Apparently he's called Baz

...as far as I know this is their only release.
