 There is a band from Canada with the same name, but this is the band from Norway. I think this is everything they recorded. They do have one demo tape that I know of but it was released as the first EP.

The Cats - The Cats Complete Singles 1968 - 1978

 This is a Tone and Wave exclusive. It took me years to assemble this collection. I believe this is every song that The Cats released in their lifetime. 

If you don't know, when Madness did "Swan Lake" they weren't covering the classic Tchaikovsky song outright. They were covering The Cats version of the song. The B-side to The Cats Swan Lake" single was called "My Girl" and, as you know, Madness also had a song called "My Girl" but the joke here is that when you played the B-side to the Cats single and you were expecting a cover of the Temptations song but what you got instead was a cover of Mary Wells' "My Guy".

 The Cats recorded a lot of their renditions of classical music in the studio but their releases of these songs were limited. They recorded reggae/soul versions of Beethoven's "Fur Elise", Bach's "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring", Mozart's "Ein Kleine Nachtmusik", Satie's "Gymnopedie No.1" and, I believe, Albinoni's "Adagio". These were never released until 2014 when a label called Kipa Recordings put out a CD with all of the Cats unreleased songs which were recorded in 1968. I don't have this CD but I am desperately looking for it.

Rhythm Trak - Don't Ask 12" (1990)

 There is a semi-well-known California punk band called War Called Peace who put out two albums in the 90s and each one had a ska track or two.

Their first album from 1995 was called "Yuppie Ghetto" and there was one ska-inspired song called "Maggot Mentality (Donahue)"

Their second album from 1998 was called "Everyday War" and it had two ska songs - "Meltdown" and "What Would You Do?".

 

The thing that people don't know about this band is that they started out as a ska band called Rhythm Trak. Maybe not 'ska' in the strictest terms, but they were a punk band who mixed in reggae and dub into just about every song.

 You might think "so?...lots of bands did that..." but there was no internet in the 80s and early 90s and bands only knew what was happening in front of them and what they saw in the clubs and venues themselves. As far as they knew they were the only band in California playing punk/reggae. They really were pioneers but, sadly, they didn't record very much. 

As far as I know they only released this one record. The band at that time was:

Robbie Rogers - vocals

Chris Sueta - drums and vocals

Steve Burdette - guitar

Adam Gonzales - bass

Peter Carreiro - guitar (and producer)

Eric Neseth - saxophone 

I know Robbie Rogers and Chris Sueta went on to form War Called Peace about a year after this record was released but I don't know what other band members joined them. War Called Peace released their first EP in 1992. It was called "WCP" and I don't have a copy (there are several for sale on Discogs but, even though it's on my want list, there are too many other things I'd rather buy first) and I have heard that there was at least one song from their Rhythm Trak days on the EP. Was it a ska song? I don't know.

I recently posted the band The Walkman and it was more popular than I expected and people asked if I know anything more about the band.

I don't.

Like the rest of you I wish they had more recordings than they actually do so this record here might satisfy some of you. 

It sounds almost exactly like The Walkman. They are from the same country as The Walkman and they were playing around the same time but, as far as I know, they have nothing at all to do with The Walkman. No shared members or any other connection. 

I'm pretty sure this is the only thing Sticky Fridge ever released but I hope I'm wrong.

 If I told you this was another Walkman song you'd believe it.

There was a compilation from 1998 called "Listen Up Sonny" that was the first release by a small label called Tough Guy Productions from Keizer, Oregon which started out with three tracks from this band 10 Dollar Mic who were from Corvallis, Oregon.

Who was the lead singer for Skankin' Pickle?

Most people would say "Bruce Lee! Mike Park!" But the original 'lead singer' for Skankin' Pickle was Mr. Clean - Mike Mattingly. When Skankin' Pickle split up and the band members went their separate ways to form other bands like The Chinkees, 78 RPMs, and the Bruce Lee Band,  Mike Mattingly started his own project called Neosoreskin which was an experimental ska-inspired band. Chances are that if you're not already a Skankin' Pickle fan you may find this band hard to digest at first.

 They put out three albums before Mr. Clean fell off a roof and broke his back whilst working as a chimney sweep.

Gangbusters - Sounded Good at the Time

 Gangbusters was one of California's first straight-forward ska bands. There were lots of other bands who played some ska but very few bands had a setlist that was almost all ska. The Untouchables, the Skeletones, the Uptones, No Doubt, etc. - they are known as the big California ska bands before the third wave hit but realistically ska was only a part of their set. Aside from Let's Go Bowling and The Donkey Show most of these 'big names' weren't full-time ska bands.

 If you know Gangbusters at all it's probably because of the song 'Bad Attitude' from the first "California Skaquake" compilation. 

When I hear bands like this I wonder why they are not one of the big names and I think it comes down to how much music they made available to take home. Gangbusters recorded a lot of their music but the only thing they ever put out for people to listen to at home or in the car or to share with their friends was one demo tape called "Vibes".

 I never found a copy of "Vibes" but around 2007 somebody sent me the MP3s of "Vibes" - or so they said. As it turns out the demo I was sent was just four songs that the band made available on their MySpace page and somebody took the time to do a mock-up of the cover using a picture from the MySpace page.

I fell for it because, first of all, I never knew what the demo tape inlay card looked like or if it even had one, and secondly, I had no way of knowing what songs were on the "Vibes" demo.

Recently I was looking for something else on eBay and this CD appeared. I had recently heard about it because one of my Facebook friends asked about it. I snagged it and I was really impressed with it. It is not an official release but a compilation of demos and live performances put together by the band on CDR.

The best part is that the "Vibes" demo tape (the four songs from MySpace) that I got years ago has three songs that do not appear on this compilation. I included that (with the fake cover) in this download.

Ska '98 - Ska '98 (1998)

If you go on eBay right now and search "ska" at least 14 million copies of this album will appear in your search. On CD and vinyl and cassette and 8-track tape. Those who don't know better would think this was the most popular album in the 1990s ska scene. 

Most of the sellers list this as a compilation album, but it's not. 

This is a Christian ska album. It is not a compilation - the "band" is called Ska '98. They weren't an actual band. It was a collaboration of Christian musicians who wanted to take advantage of the popularity of ska at the time to preach the Gospel. 

And preach they did. If you are Christian you will appreciate the lyrics. If you are not Christian you can still appreciate that they were talented ska musicians but the lyrics will wear thin real fast.

Mighty Snortin' Powder Rangers - Snortid (1998)

 Great female-fronted ska-punk with an unfortunate name. They had a couple of songs that were on compilations but those songs are on this demo tape. I don't know if they ever had an official release but I'm hoping there is one out there.
