Disband were from Michigan. I can't tell you if they ever did anything besides this.
There used to be a time that whenever this record appeared on eBay everybody would jump on it. After losing a couple bidding wars I bid really high on it. In the end I was the only bidder. I guess everybody who was fighting over it eventually found their own copies. There's one on eBay right now that nobody wants.

Bop (Harvey) were from Michigan. They mixed reggae and ska with African and Latin rhythm and, from what I hear, they put on one hell of a show.
This is often considered to be their first release - and is is the first on cd but they did have a cassette only release before this.

...the demo tape I have is plain black with no writing on it. It has a total of 8 songs...the five listed above, a demo of "Do the Right Thing" from the 12" and two other songs that I don't know the titles of.
I'm guessing one is called "Forevermore" and the other is an instrumental so I have no clue what that one is called.
 


All 8 demo songs and the 12" are included in this download.

The Terrorists (complete recordings)

The New York City band The Terrorists released a collection of their complete recordings from 1977-1982 on a cd compilation called "Forces" but that compilation was incomplete. Although the song "I Want Justice" (a cover of the Delroy Wilson song from 1965) was included on the cd and featured Lee Perry and Roland Alphonso, there was another version (a live version) which saw an actual vinyl release in 1980. The song Justice was recorded at Max's Kansas City and was released with a studio recording of a song called Riis Park which was also not on the cd.

This download includes the 7" as well as the "Forces" cd, and the original version of "I Want Justice" by Delroy Wilson (with the Wailers as his band).

The Pin Baskets - 30,000 Rabbits 7'' (1984)

The Pin Baskets released one full length in 1986 called Fifteen Minutes with Betty Betz and they contributed two live songs for the compilation album Punk, Live in Brouwershoeck which featured punk and heavy metal bands, mainly from Holland recorded live in1982 in Leeuwarden.

...and HERE's the song "Does it Matter?" from the live compilation.

They were a great band but this is the only thing they did that had a ska influence. If you can find a copy of this, grab it. It's hard to come by.

Dee Sign - Dee Sign LP (1981) [RE-UPLOADED MAY 30th, 2016]

This is one of those things that you always see for sale in the ska section but it really isn't ska at all. It's punk with only the slightest reggae influence. For fans of the Slits, Mo-Dettes, or Liliput.

Dee Sign were an all-female band from Denmark and this is probably the only thing they released. It is not hard to find a copy, but it's a pretty decent punk album that is often overlooked. Lead singer Annie Larsen later changed her name to Annie Panic and played with the band Public Panic before releasing an eponymous demo cassette in 1990.

Trick Dog - What a Shame 7'' (1981)

Great rare ska song from an unexpected source. This is (most likely) Trick Dog's only release but members did go on to form the band Good Looks who released a single "Every Day Of My Life b/w What's In It For Me ?" in 1982, and they are the group responsible for the closing theme to Jim'll Fix It.

"The theme song was sung by voice-over artist Lynda Hayes.The closing theme was sung by the group Good Looks (featuring Lavinia & Lewis Rodgers, siblings of Clodagh Rodgers) who competed in the 1982 A Song for Europe competition. Savile "fixed it" for a young viewer to perform the song with the group on an edition of the show."

Scooter - Wooly Bully (1980)

Wooly Bully was written and first recorded by Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs in 1965. It was supposed to be called Hully Gully but since the Olympics already released a song called Hully Gully the record label wasn't comfortable with the title and implored them to change it. They called it Wooly Bully after Domingo Zamudio's cat.

And here's a bit of trivia...by the 50s kids would use the insult "square" to describe somebody who doesn't fit in. A square peg doesn't fit into a round hole. This was from the 1873 book Kenelm Chillingly, His Adventures and Opinions by the British writer Edward Bulwer Lynton who also first wrote "It was a dark and stormy night...". Over time the origin of the phrase was lost and kids just accepted that 'square' was an insult. Much like calling someone a loser by putting your finger and your thumb in the shape of an "L" on your forehead, kids back then would make the shape of a square with their fingers and thumbs (as seen in The Sandlot). This was called L-7.

One of the lyrics in Wooly Bully is "Hattie told Maddie let's not take no chance, Let's not be L-7 come and learn to dance".
Out of the 4 million bands that have covered Wooly Bully this is the lyric that they always get wrong. Bad Manners got this line right but they fucked up a few others.

Thankfully this day and age we have the internet to look up the lyrics.

If you are in a band and you want to cover Wooly Bully please get the lyrics right.

And here's another bit of trivia...the world doesn't exactly need another version of Wooly Bully. If you do play it just stick to playing it live. It's a fun live song but the original Sam the Sham and the Pharoah's version is the only version that should be played out of speakers.

Slackers - Slackers 12" (1983)

This has nothing to do with the New York band The Slackers. (I guess you could say that 'before there were The Nods there were Slackers'). This was a short lived band from Kalamazoo, Michigan. I can't find a damn thing about the band. The song Sinsi Song is featured on the Jump Up Records' compilation Death of an American Skathic but not even the inlay of that CD offers any information

Tom Collins and the Cocktail Shakers - Pick It Up (1992)

 Tom Collins was formed in the fall of 1991 by Gerry LaFemina and Matt Mullins, two mfa students at WMU. As far as we know they were Kalamazoo's first and only ska fusion band. At its height the band contained 10 members: Gerry (vox), Matt (guitars) Levi Strickland (bass), AA Miller (drums), Megan Coats (keyboard), Kelly Argyle (baritone sax) Jon Laviari (tenor sax), Paul Dorich (alto sax), Dave Marlatt, (trombone) and Jeff Sarnacki (trombone). They regularly played Club Soda, Harvey's, local festivals and various clubs throughout Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and Wisconsin. In late 1991 they put out their first recording, a 45 with the songs "Chaplinesque" and "Animated Violence" recorded at Brown and Brown studios. This was shortly followed by their full length cassette release "Pick it Up" also recorded at Brown and Brown. The band was known for its high energy shows and played with a number of Ska legends including, Bad Manners and The Toasters. The band broke up in 1994. Members have since gone on to play in many well known local bands including, Schrodinger's Cat, Tao Jones, The Large Hungarians, Blue Dahlia, Whiskey Before Breakfast and Yoroka.

Sharp Ties - Get That Beat (1981) [LINK UPDATED 09/11/2016]

Sharp Ties were from Greece. They played new wave rock but their first album had a heavy ska/reggae/mod influence. Their second album "Safari Boys" released a year later was almost completely devoid of the ska sound. There were 2 songs that had a slight influence Sleep Tight Tonight and Camino Real but the rest of the album was straight forward new wave rock.

They had a total of 4 full length albums and I only have the first two so I don't know if they have any other ska styled songs but they also had some singles (HERE's their discography). One of which was the "Work" 7" from 1985. The b-side "Boogaloo" has the influence so I have included that song in this download.

Gruppo Sportivo (LINK UPDATED July 19th, 2015)

Gruppo Sportivo is from the Hague. They formed in 1976 and are still performing and recording. They have released lots of music. Band leader Hans Vandenburg is an amazing lyricist and he has released several solo albums. Even though they had Bette Bright as a frequent back-up singer they never were a ska band. Amongst their many releases they did show an occasional ska influence.

The Conspiracy - 1993 demo tape

The Conspiracy formed in 1992 in Petaluma, California and were one of Northern California's most popular ska bands. They released 2 demo tapes (this is the second) before releasing a full length in 1995 called "Too Far Gone". They then released a 7" called "The Boot / Circus Circus" and a compilation of outtakes that included both demos but did not include the song Amoeba Man from this tape (but this same version is on Too Far Gone. In 2011 they released the full length "The Finishing Touch".
